Verwant met: Latijn mūscus 'mos' (Spaans musco); Litouws mūsaĩ 'schimmel op zure melk'; Oudkerkslavisch mŭchŭ 'mos' (Russisch moch); < pie. *mus- (IEW 742).
De betekenis 'moerassige grond' is bij uitbreiding ontstaan uit 'plaats waar veel mos groeit' en komt alleen in de Germaanse talen voor. In het Nederlands is deze zeldzaam.
