Wrsch. ontleend aan het Duits of Nederduits, naast het inheemse els 2 'gebogen priem'.
Mnd. al 'els, priem'; ohd. āla (nhd. Ahle); oe. ǣl, āl; < pgm. *ēl-, en met korte klinker oe. al, æl, eal (ne. awl); on. alr; < pgm. *al-. Aan het Germaans zijn reeds vroeg ontleend Litouws ýla en Oudpruisisch ylo.
Mogelijk behorend bij pie. *h1ol-, *h1el-, en verwant met Sanskrit ā́rā 'els, priem' < *(H)ólo (Polomé 1993). Het woord zou tot de vroege technische terminologie behoren.
